The Ministry of Power under the leadership of former Hon. Minister of Power – Dr. Rilwan Lanre Babalola, recognizing the need for the massive training requirement, consummated  the process of creating an institute solely catering for the power industry not just for NIGERIA but capable of meeting the training needs of the whole West African region. 

This gave birth to the establishment of the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) on March 23rd, 2009. NAPTIN became a REGISTERED legal entity with its incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission on 1st September, 2009 which incidentally was the date it officially rolled-out as the official trainer of power sector personnel. This was officially commemorated with a Roll-out Workshop on the same date at the Classic wing of the Abuja Rockview Hotels.

One of the cardinal objectives of the Nigerian Electric Power Policy is to have an electric supply industry that can meet the needs of its citizens in the 21st Century. A key aspect of meeting these objectives is human resources development. Therefore, the Nigerian Electric Power Policy clearly stated as one of its strategies that Government shall support the establishment of a national electricity training institute.

NAPTIN’s Mandate:

  • NAPTIN will serve as a focal point for human resource development and workforce capacity building as well as research centre on matters relating to power in Nigeria and possibly Africa in general
  • Other comprehensive hands-on engineering and technical training programs for professional and graduates in the Power Sector
  • Serve as a finishing school for graduates of engineering and or polytechnics for pupilage-like training program for a period of 24 months and eventually develop and provide its own degrees just like the Petroleum Training Institutes (PTI), Warri
  • Provide capability to formulate and implement pilot projects in the relevant fields
  • Ensure maintenance of industry common standards dissemination of new ideas and technology to the Power Industry
  • Ensure effective monitoring of technical standards and compliance with common operating standards
  • Provide customer-focused learning and development solutions
  • Assist in identifying employees’ COMPETENCY gaps and training needs
  • Build and maintain framework of key skills, knowledge and behaviour for high performance industries
  • Provide manpower development advice to industry participants
  • Design and INSTALL effective maintenance training programs for engineers/ technologists, technicians, artisans and craftsmen to ensure a high maintenance culture is utilized throughout the Industry to enhance efficiency
  • Develop management, leadership, regulatory and ICT skills
  • Design professional certificate programs that will ensure proficiency and global recognition.
